10. Gehrayee (1980)

Though not very popular, but one of the best horror movies of Bollywood. The film, produced by N. B. Kamat, was influenced by one of the scariest movies of all time, The Exorcist (1973). Gehrayee is a 1980 Indian horror film directed by Vikas Desai and Aruna Raje, based on a script by Vijay Tendulkar, Desai and Raje. The star cast included Padmini Kolhapure, Sriram Lagoo, Anant Nag, and Indrani Mukherjee with Amrish Puri in a guest appearance.

9.Ragini MMS (2011)

Produced by Ekta Kapoor, this flick went on to prove that even low budget films can garner high revenues. This film is about a girl, Ragini, who goes on a holiday with her boyfriend unaware of the fact that he intends to create an MMS of their most intimate moments to fuel his dream of becoming an actor. Living in a haunted cottage and being tortured by a witch, Ragini's boyfriend is forced to commit suicide while, after a lot of torture and persecution, Ragini still survives. Short and critically acclaimed, the film is inspired by the 2007 American supernatural horror film Paranormal Activity and is partly based on the real story of a girl from Delhi named Deepika. This film has also been remade in Malayas Klip 3gp in 2011.

8.13B (2009)

Yavarum Nalam (English: All Is Well), is a Tamil psychological horror film directed by Vikram Kumar, starring R.Madhavan and Neetu Chandra in the lead roles. Produced by Suresh Balaje and George Pius, the movie was simultaneously filmed and released in Tamil and in Hindi as 13B with a slightly different cast. With a soundtrack by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and background score by Tubby Parik, the horror was released on March 6, 2009 to highly positive reviews from critics.

7.Veerana (1988)

This film whisked by the special horror wizards of Bollywood, the Ramsay Brothers, and famous for its Mario Bava-like use of colored gels mixed with atmospheric sets, was released in 1988 and declared a super hit. Starring Hemant Birje, Jasmin and Kulbhushan Kharbanda, the film is among the most successful and trendsetting horror movies of Indian cinema.


Another thrilling film from Ram Gopal Verma,Vaastu Shastra, stars Sushmita Sen and J. D. Chakravarthy in the lead roles. It was released in India and did okay. However, later it was dubbed into Telugu as Marri Chettu and went on to scare the audiences some more. The story starts with Jhilmil (Sushmita Sen) and Virag Rao (J.D. Chakravarthy) buying a new house in the suburbs of Mumbai. Both work late, keeping them away from their little son. However, the problem arises when he starts making imaginary friends - as per Jhilmil and Virag's assumption. But when their son starts getting obsessed with his "friends", they have to reconsider their belief. It is soon revealed that the "imaginary friends" are ghosts who have been telling their son to move out of their house.

5. Jani Dushman (1979)

With a large star cast including almost every famed name of yesteryear - Sunil Dutt, Sanjeev Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Jeetendra, Vinod Mehra, Premnath, Rekha, Reena Roy, Neetu Singh, Bindiya Goswami, Sarika, Yogita Bali, Aruna Irani, Amrish Puri and a few other supporting actors, and a plot as invincible as the bride-abducting "bhoot" in the story, Jani Dhushman gained uncensored appreciation. The flick was a trendsetter in the horror genre of Indian cinema and also a huge commercial success.

4.Bhoot (2003)

Directed by Ram Gopal Verma and starring Urmila Matondkar, Ajay Devgn, Rekha and Nana Patekar, Bhoot was an atypical movie owing to the lack of songs in it. Concentrating on the spook factor rather than the romance and music, this movie managed to carve a niche for itself amongst the league of other bone-chilling films of B-Town. Vishal (Ajay Devgn) is a man who doesn't believe in the unseen and purchases a high-rise apartment, with a sordid past, at a ridiculously low price, carefully keeping the apartment's shady past a secret from his wife Swati (Urmila Matondkar). However, Swati soon starts behaving abnormally and Vishal enlists Dr. Rajan (Victor Banerjee), a psychiatrist, for her treatment. When he witnesses Swati killing the watchman in an inexplicable way, Vishal finds himself gearing up for a battle against the very forces whose existence he had denied till date.

3.Raaz (2002)

The story revolves around a couple, essayed by Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea, who have moved to Ooty to save their failing marriage. However, what they find in their new home is more than what their strained relationship can take. Sanjana, the wife, gets more than she bargained for when she finds out that the house is not only haunted by a ghost but that the ghost has her sights set on her husband. Directed and produced by Vikram and Mahesh Bhatt, the film is an unofficial adaptation of What Lies Beneath.

2. Raat (1992)

This 1992 release, directed by recently appointed King of Horror, Ram Gopal Verma, Raat, set a milestone in Indian horror cinema. With an incredible performance by Revathy, the leading lady, along with Om Puri, this film was released in multiple languages and went on to be considered as the pioneer of supernatural movies in Bollywood.

1. 1920 (2008)

One of the scariest movies of all time in Indian cinema, 1920 was written and directed by Vikram Bhatt. The film revolves around the events surrounding a married couple living in a haunted house in the year 1920. The movie starred debutante actors Rajneesh Duggal and Adah Sharma as the married couple and was also dubbed into Telugu as 1920 Gayathri.
