Manisha Koirala opens up about turning down 'Dil Toh Pagal Hai'

Manisha Koirala, known for her remarkable performances, is gearing up for a noteworthy return to the screen with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-anticipated project, Heeramandi. In this period drama set to premiere on Netflix from May 1st, Manisha portrays the character of Mallikajaan, adding depth to the captivating narrative.

Reflecting on her journey in the film industry, Manisha recently shared a candid moment of introspection during promotional activities for Heeramandi. She revealed a decision she deeply regrets, shedding light on the inner workings of Bollywood.

Opening up about her past insecurities, Manisha candidly admitted to turning down a significant role in Yash Chopra’s iconic film, Dil Toh Pagal Hai. The actress confessed that the prospect of being compared to the legendary Madhuri Dixit left her apprehensive, ultimately leading her to decline the opportunity.

Interestingly, the role of Nisha, eventually essayed by Karisma Kapoor, was initially offered to a roster of talented actresses including Urmila Matondkar, Kajol, Raveena Tandon, Juhi Chawla, and Manisha Koirala. However, Manisha's hesitation cost her a chance to be part of a cinematic milestone.

Expressing her regret to India Today, Manisha recalled her conversation with Yash Chopra, expressing her admiration for the filmmaker's artistry while acknowledging her missed opportunity. She admitted, "It is my dream to be your heroine, solo. You are pitting me against Madhuri ji". Despite her aspirations, fear overshadowed her judgment, leading to her withdrawal from the project.

In Heeramandi, Manisha joins a stellar cast featuring Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Richa Chaddha, Sonakshi Sinha, and Sharmin Segal, promising audiences a captivating cinematic experience filled with drama and intrigue.
